Good Vibes May Be Getting Better

We’ve heard a lot of claims about “vibration therapy” so we decided to dig into the subject to give a heads-up to the SportsWarp community. We have researched both informational reports and manufactures claims to try and drill down what it might mean to sports performance.  It appears that an increasing number of athletes, sports organizations, fitness facilities and medical services have adopted the technologies and techniques.  To access additional perspectives, click here

  Anaerobic or Aerobic Exercise

Opinions on the benefits of exercise keep changing as more scientific and practical information becomes available. In training for sport, the nature and practice of a specific sport has to come into major consideration.  Does an offensive lineman need to run miles in training to become better at that sport; the answer is an emphatic no.  But, in training for cross-country those miles over diverse terrain are very important.  The decision has to be made on how much aerobic capacity is needed and balanced against the power generation needed.  So, when designing a training program for an athlete the nature of peak performance for that specific function is all-important. Freeweight vs Machines

Most fitness centers and school weight-rooms provide a variety of strength building apparatus that includes barbells, dumbbells and selectorize machines.  The best use of these tools is open to discussion.  But, be aware that no sport is played while sitting or laying down. All sports are ground-based (with the exception of water sports), i.e., played or performed with one or two feet on the ground.  So, it makes sense that weight training for sports should be done with one or two feet on the ground.  You will get more benefit from performing strength training movements this way as opposed to sitting or lying on a bench. Strength Training For Basketball

The most important concept that athletes and coaches have to grasp is that weight training is not body building.  If the definition of body building is making muscles larger and bulkier than that would not be conducive to making an athlete more athletic.  Consider that the current viewpoint is – being athletic is moving faster and more powerfully through space.  If an athlete becomes stronger he or she will perform better. And there is only one way to make an athlete stronger, and that is by stressing the skeletal muscles against resistance.  A by-product of strength training is less chance of injury. Protein Is Important

Protein is the most important component of the skeletal muscle cell.  It really is an essential building block of muscle integrity and health.  Most humans get enough protein from a balanced diet. Competitive athletes are not most humans.  We believe that normal diet is not enough, so the right kind of protein is needed for intense athlete training.  The stress that athletes put on their bodies during sports performance training tends to tear down muscle tissue and it is with rest and the proper nutrition that the repairing of this damage takes place.
